Wayne Hemingway invites The Girls to perform at 'Vintage at Goodwood' taster event

Article text
A special series of performances by artists The Girls of their tableau 'Garden Party'. 18/19/20 September 2009, 3pm - 3.45pm daily, Goodwood Revival.

Wayne Hemingway, one of Britain's most acclaimed designers, has invited re-emerging fine artist duo The Girls to stage their performance work ‘Garden Party’ at Goodwood Revival 2009, as part of a taster for his new venture, a new annual festival 'Vintage at Goodwood' in August 2010. The Girls performance is a traditional British afternoon tea with a difference, as at this garden party, in reference to the Japanese tradition of Nyotaimori, the cucumber sandwiches are served to a vicar off the naked body of one of the artists.

"No party is complete without good food and a great place to display it", said Wayne Hemingway.

The artists, known collectively as ‘The Girls’, are Zoë Sinclair and Andrea Blood, both 33, whose collaboration began thirteen years ago at Central Saint Martins. The Girls art work consists of performance art and surreal staged self-portrait photography, exploring themes of Englishness, childhood, gender, women’s relationship with food, eroticism, and the art of drag. The Evening Standard on The Girls art work: ‘Sexy, irreverent post-feminism. Think Angela Carter crossed with Cindy Sherman.’ (Liz Hoggard 2008).

‘This male fantasy of sensory pleasure and power dynamics, is acted out self-reflectively by The Girls, thereby turning the archetypal gender roles on their heads, as the female becomes at once both subject and object’, said Beverley Knowles, owner of Beverley Knowles Fine Art gallery, of ‘Garden Party’.

The Girls have previously exhibited in group shows at the National Portrait Gallery, the ICA, The Photographers’ Gallery, Beverley Knowles Fine Art, and the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art. The duo have been published in The Observer, The Guardian and Creative Review.

Vintage at Goodwood is concentrating on the 50's and 60's for the 2009 taster event with live music from Acid Jazz's, The Filthy Six, The Broken Hearts, Katy Carr and more. There will be DJ sets from its curators Eddie Piller and Luke Morgan, from Vintage at Goodwood instigator Wayne Hemingway and, Johnny T, The Hipshaker DJ's, Simon The Preacher, LLoyd Atrill and more. There will be burlesque performers, catwalk shows curated by Katherine Higgins, and a cocktail bar designed by Vintage instigator Gerardine Hemingway and design curator Morag Myerscough.

Goodwood Revival is the world’s most popular historic motor race meeting and the only event of its kind to be staged in the romantic time capsule of the Fifties and Sixties. The Revival offers exceptional wheel-to-wheel racing around a classic circuit, untouched by the modern world. In sympathy with the period theme, the majority of visitors choose to dress in classical style; the result is an astonishing spectacle, quite unique in the world.

The Girls will perform ‘Garden Party’ daily during Goodwood Revival, from 3pm – 3.45pm on 18/19/20 September 2009. Find them in the Vintage at Goodwood area, on Richmond Lawn. Tickets for Goodwood Revival must be purchased in advance, see the website (goodwood.co.uk) or telephone 01243 755055.

MORE ABOUT THE GIRLS

The Girls are re-emerging British artist duo Zoë Sinclair (b.1976, UK) and Andrea Blood (b.1975, UK), who first met at school in Dorset, aged 16. Blood and Sinclair began collaborating in 1996 during their first year at Central Saint Martins, also sharing a Brixton flat, and were soon nicknamed 'The Girls' by the Central Saint Martins photography department. Several years into their partnership, Blood and Sinclair were finishing each others sentences like Wyndham’s Midwich Cuckoos; wearing matching pink outfits; and winning a string of awards for their surreal, very English work. After a seven year hiatus, the award-winning duo are once again collaborating and are currently working on their first book of self-portraits.
